Tom,
a 32-year-old African American male, has been married for 10
years and has two sons ages 10 and 7 years old. Tom has been
employed as a construction worker for 15 years, but was given
a leave of absence from a recent job due to an arrest for possession
of amphetamines. His employer promised to rehire Tom if he received
treatment and completed all his legal obligations. Tom went
to court and requested that he be sentenced as a Proposition
36 participant. He was referred to the PROTOTYPES Community
Assessment Service Center (CASC), where he was assessed by a
Substance Abuse Specialist and referred to outpatient treatment
services.
Tom
successfully completed a 23-week treatment program, is engaged
in aftercare services, and has returned to his job. During his
monthly session with his counselors, Tom works on maintaining
his sobriety and continuing to build a stable life for himself
and his family.
Community
Assessment Service Center (CASC)
The
goal of the PROTOTYPES Community Assessment Service Center is to help
residents of the San Gabriel Valley access needed social services, particularly
mental health and substance abuse services, through existing agencies
in the area. The CASC conducts mental health and substance abuse assessments
and referrals to appropriate services to CalWORKs and GR eligible individuals,
as well as to anyone else in the community who would like to be referred
for mental health, substance abuse or other social services. The CASC
also serves Proposition 36 court-referred individuals.
The
PROTOTYPES Community Assessment Service Center has three sites in the
San Gabriel Valley: El Monte, Pomona, and Pasadena. When clients arrive
at one of the Community Assessment Service Center sites, a trained Community
Assessment Service Center professional administers a standardized mental
health and substance abuse assessment. CASC staff members then identify
an appropriate level of service for each client and refer the client
to a substance abuse or mental health service provider, residential
or nonresidential, that can meet the client's needs. Several additional
services are offered at the El Monte CASC site: physical examinations
and testing for tuberculosis and HIV.
