Sandra
came to PROTOTYPES WomensCare to get the results of the pregnancy
and HIV tests she had taken. Both were positive. Numb, distraught,
and uncertain about how she had been infected, Sandra was afraid
for her unborn child and terrified to disclose her HIV status
to her partner, fearing he would accuse her of being unfaithful.
Sandra's life was changed by an invitation to participate as
a workshop hostess for PROTOTYPES' Healing Our Village Conference.
There, she learned about medical interventions that could prevent
her from passing HIV to her child. Sandra said, "I left
the conference feeling encouraged, empowered and am no longer
afraid to share my HIV status with my partner."
Since
the inception of the conference in 1991, clients have worked
side-by-side with the organizing committee to present this event
to more than 4,000 providers.
Josette
Mondanaro Women's Resource Center (JMWRC)
The Josette Mondanaro Women's Resource Center (JMWRC) encompasses three
programs. Its staff development program provides training to staff from
more than 200 community-based organizations across LA County on substance
abuse, HIV, hepatitis C, trauma, and mental health. JMWRC also convenes
an annual skills building conference, Healing Our Village, which brings
together providers and clients/consumers from more than 400 agencies
to learn best practices in providing culturally responsive services
to persons with co-occurring disorders. Finally, JMWRC provides technical
assistance to community-based organizations and other community groups
for the purpose of enhancing their substance abuse, mental health, domestic
violence, and other vital services for women, adolescents, and children.

HIV
Cross-Training
PROTOTYPES' HIV Cross-Training Program was implemented in 1991. The
program's goal is to increase the knowledge and awareness of administrators,
executive directors, clinicians, and other front line staff from community-based
organizations throughout LA country about effective education, prevention
and intervention strategies for treating HIV/AIDS, particularly as it
relates to substance abuse, mental illness, domestic violence, trauma,
and other health concerns. The program also provides HIV-Focused Community
Forum/Cross-Training Sessions, which highlight emerging trends and/or
new research data.

Professional
Training
PROTOTYPES' Professional Development Program offers training to social
services practitioners, including psychologists, social workers, nurses,
and substance abuse counselors, to help them reach their maximum potential
and to better serve their clients, particularly those highly vulnerable
clients with co-occurring disorders. The program includes courses that
provide continuing education and certification credits for these professionals.
