In
the 1970s, Barry received a master's degree in philosophy and
had dreams of becoming a professor. His aspirations were dashed
when he began abusing alcohol and prescription drugs. Barry
attended Alcoholics Anonymous daily for five years. It helped
him, but he needed more assistance to help him cope with the
visual and auditory hallucinations he was experiencing. In 1997,
Barry was diagnosed with schizophrenia. In February, 2000, he
began attending Dual Diagnosis groups at I-CAN and receiving
individual therapy there.
Barry
is now clean and sober. He has learned how to better cope with
life and manage the symptoms of his illness. Barry has found
fulfillment as an assistant in the Dual Diagnosis Program, as
a literacy tutor, and as a volunteer in his community.
